How Governance Works  - MK College

How Governance Works

Our Board members consist of up to 14 volunteers who are drawn from the community (independent governors), the CEO & Group Principal, 2 staff governors and 2 student governors. Independent governors bring a diverse range of skills, knowledge and experience from their various backgrounds, including education, business, not for profit and public services. Diversity of thought and experience and understanding the skills needs of employers and our community is extremely important.

The Board meets for around two hours eight times a year and a strategic half day. The Board oversees activities across the Group (the campus provision in Milton Keynes and Bletchley, an Institute of Technology and a range of prison locations).

In addition, there is a mix of statutory and advisory committees which meet at least three times a year, such as:

Audit and Risk (statutory)

Advises the Board on the adequacy and effectiveness of the corporation’s assurance framework and internal controls for the effective and efficient use of resources, solvency, and the safeguarding of assets.

Search and Governance (statutory)

Advises the Board on all matters relating to the effectiveness of Governance and makes recommendations to the Board on appointing independent governors.

Remuneration (statutory)

Considers and decides the conditions of service and terms of employment of senior post holders.

Curriculum and Quality (advisory group)

Monitors, challenges, and scrutinises the quality of the student experience.

Finance (advisory group)

Monitors, challenges, and scrutinises the College’s finances.

Capital Projects and Monitoring Group (advisory group)

Oversees major capital projects in accordance with the College’s Financial Regulations

Governors are also linked to a curriculum or business support area to triangulate information from the leadership team and for additional assurance.
