Course overview
Research has shown that the first eight years of a child’s life are critical for their cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Therefore, it is vital they receive the support they need for this development.
This course will equip learners with a detailed understanding of child development, including safeguarding children and promoting their health, safety and welfare. Learners will also look at how to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in Early Years settings, support children with additional needs, and support children’s development. They will look at how to plan and lead play activities to support children’s learning and development and how to work in partnership with other professionals and key individuals.
What will I do?
This course is split into eighteen manageable units:
Unit 1: Understand child development
Unit 2: Support the holistic development of children
Unit 3: Safeguarding and child protection in early years
Unit 4: Promote the health, safety and welfare of young children
Unit 5: Support the health, well-being and physical care needs of children in Early Years settings
Unit 6: Equality, diversity and inclusion in Early Years settings
Unit 7: Support positive behaviour in children
Unit 8: Support children with additional support needs
Unit 9: Support attachment when working with children in Early Years settings
Unit 10: Support children through transitions
Unit 11: Plan, lead and evaluate purposeful play activities to support children’s learning and development
Unit 12: Support the development of reading, literacy and mathematical skills in Early Years settings
Unit 13: Extending children’s learning and thinking in Early Years settings
Unit 14: Assessment and observation in Early Years settings
Unit 15: Recording, storing reporting and sharing information in Early Years settings
Unit 16: Working in partnership with colleagues, professionals, and key individuals in Early Years settings
Unit 17: Continuing professional development in Early Years education
Unit 18: Competency assessments* *This competency unit at the end of the course enables learners to demonstrate the skills they have learned and practice.

Is it for me?
This course is suitable for those who work with children from birth to 5 years olds in a variety of settings. It develops the knowledge and skills that are required to work with children from birth to 5 years together with an understanding of the expected development of children aged 5-7 years.
The knowledge elements of this course are delivered online using our learning platform Equal. Students must have full use of either a PC, Laptop or Tablet and have ongoing access to the Internet.
Learners will need to be observed in the workplace on a minimum of 3 occasions undertaking daily work activities.

How much will I have to study each week?
The course duration is approximately 6 months for experienced practitioners who hold a Level 2 qualification or have been working in the sector for a long period of time. Less experienced learners will take up to 9 months. Course start dates are offered throughout the year.
How will I be assessed?
This course requires the completion and passing of marked online unit assessments at the end of each unit. Learners will also be observed in the workplace on a minimum of 3 occasions to confirm occupational competence. Learners are allocated a course tutor who will mark assessments and are able to offer support through the online learning platform.

- This course is available to be fully funded under the Level 3 Skills Offer for eligible applicants who do not already have a full Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) qualification.
Applicants for this course may qualify for an Advanced Learning Loan if not eligible for the Level 3 Skills Offer.

Entry requirements
You must already hold a Level 2 or equivalent English qualification.
All applicants must be at least 19 years old as of the 31st of August to enrol for the course and have a good level of English skills to a minimum of Level One standard.
Applicants aged 19-23 are only eligible if they have already achieved a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent. Please contact us for clarification if required.
Applicants aged 24+ do not require any prior academic qualifications, but do need to meet the required standard of English skills. Applicants must have lived in the UK for the last three years, currently reside in England, with a postcode outside of London, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool, Tees Valley Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, West Midlands, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, West of England, Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Northumberland.
