Public Services Advanced
A career in Public Services relates to anything from the Police Force, Armed Forces, Emergency Services and Prison Service. People in this industry have the important responsibility of keeping us safe, being the first to react to criminal activity and emergencies and keep order in society. A successful career in the services requires outstanding dedication, discipline and communication skills, but is incredibly rewarding.
What will I do?
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services prepares you for selection in a range of employment opportunities, the Emergency Services, Armed Forces, Border Control, Probation and Rehabilitation roles or Prison Service. It also provides an opportunity for entry to the HND in Public Services and entry to university. Whilst studying this course, you will focus on real-life public service-based scenarios. Our tutors are highly experienced in their respective fields and have vast industry expertise and service links. You will undertake work experience which should be relevant to your chosen speciality within the public services. In addition, you will learn how to successfully work as a part of a team in different leadership roles. Where possible, trips will support learning, putting what you’ve learned in the classroom out into the field and you will have the opportunity to learn from visiting Guest Speakers.
Over your time on the course with us, you will study a number of different subjects which will help you to develop your key employability skills and provide you with other key practical skills. You will be subject to completing both coursework and will be required to sit exams on two core units. You will have the opportunity to take part in an Expedition in the second year of your course where you can put all the navigation and outdoor skills you have learned into practice.
This course will prepare you for entry into a range of different services within the sector. You will understand the application process and know what will be required of you, to give you the best possible chance to get to where you want to be. You could also continue your studies with a university-level qualification here at MK College. Your tutors will guide you through application processes, offering support where needed.
Is it for me?
If you’ve always had a desire to join any of the public services, this is an ideal place to kick off your career. You must have a tough character, and not be afraid to take on new and sometimes intimidating tasks. Leadership and team-work skills are essential, as you will often depend on your colleagues on the job. You must be able to follow instructions precisely, be respectful and act professionally at all times.
