Course overview

One of the most important factors in the sporting industry is leadership. From captains, to coaches, to managers, these positions are highly respected and sought after. With a national incentive to get children more active, there has never been a better time to get involved in the delivery of physical education and sport in schools. You can inspire the next generation to try something new, get involved and get outdoors by learning to understand children and young people’s development.

Please note: You must be at least 17 years of age to study this course.

What will I do?

You will understand the industry first-hand through work experience, delivering events and relevant coaching courses completed during the year. You will gain valuable volunteering experience with local schools and other partnerships, essentially learning on the job. From planning physical education and school sport programmes, to becoming a mentor, to supporting gifted and talented learners, you will learn the ins and outs of the industry, preparing you for employment. You will spend your time in College developing your knowledge and understanding of coaching whilst planning, delivering and reviewing the sessions you lead. You will receive a fully enhanced DBS check and a reference for future employment, as well as expert teaching by specialist staff. You will also extend your knowledge through guest speakers and external tutors, furthering your insight into the industry.

What’s next?

Depending on what steps you want to take next, you could move on to study a university-level qualification to deepen your knowledge and experience. You may decide to kick off your career straight away with the experience you’ve gained by taking up a position as a coach or teaching assistant in a local school, or with our support you can look into apprenticeships and continue your education whilst earning a wage.

Is it for me?

Whether you dream of coaching a Premier League team, want to help people feel better about themselves, or want to get children into your favourite sport, a qualification in sports could help you reach your goal. You must be an outstanding verbal and written communicator and have excellent organisational skills. You must be approachable, friendly and offer encouragement to help people gain the confidence to try out new sports and get involved in group activities.

Entry requirements

Students will need 4 grade 4s including English and Maths.

Please note – you will be required to pass a DBS check to successfully gain a place on this course.
