Course overview

This course focuses on developing skills in the technical and software elements of the digital industry. Technical ability and a problem-solving approach are a must, as is an interest in working in the Computing industry. You will gain a broad understanding of the core skills required in the digital industry and is aimed at preparing you for Apprenticeships, further study or Employment.

The course is delivered in blocks with software skills, web, graphics and technical units all part of the study programme. Work experience, skills for success, English and maths will also be core elements of this course.

You will develop your knowledge, skills and experience related to IT Technical Support alongside developing your wider digital skills for work and English & Maths. This course is taught by teachers with real industry experience. You will be able to visit the workplace enabling you to experience the industry first-hand and prepare you for your next steps.

What will I do?

You will complete a Digital Skills for Work qualification, this is designed to prepare you for your next steps and support you to develop skills for work experience, employment and progression to future courses you will focus on:

• Understanding how to protect devices and data
• Communicating socially & professionally using technology
• Applying digital skills in personal and business situations
• Using digital resources to facilitate your own career.

You will develop your skills further by completing a Certificate in IT Technical Support. The units you will study are:

• Set Up and Configure Technology Systems
• Exploring Current and Emerging Technologies
• Security Protection and Risk Management
• Working as an IT Support Technician

What’s next?

This study programme is designed to give a broad base of knowledge to allow progression to the level 3 course or apprenticeship programme.

Whatever you would like to do on completion of this course, we will support you to achieve it.

Options for further study include Digital T level, Transition to Advanced Digital and L3 Infrastructure Technician Apprenticeship.

Is it for me?

You should have an understanding of how the entire creation and worldwide usage of the internet has affected the economy, and pretty much every active business today.

You must be a logical thinker to succeed in IT, be technically minded and be great at problem-solving.

If you want a career with wide progression options, the ability to further your learning and expand your knowledge in a variety of areas, a course in computing is a great place to start.

Entry requirements

Level 1: You require GCSE English or maths at Grade E/2 or Functional Skills Entry 3 in English and maths.

Level 2: You require a D/3 or above in English and maths or Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths plus at least 2 other GCSEs at D/3 or above or a relevant Level 1 vocational qualification.

Once we have received your application you will be invited to a programme interview which will give you the chance to ask any questions you have about the course and for us to discuss which level you are most suited to based on your current / predicted results. 

If you meet the entry requirements you will be enrolled on our Level 2 programme where you will gain a specialist qualification in your chosen area. If you don’t quite meet the entry requirements for Level 2 you will be enrolled onto our Skills Academy programme. Skills Academy gives you the opportunity to pick up essential study stills whilst still gaining technical knowledge in your chosen area. On completion of this course you will gain a Vocational Studies Certificate which will enable you to progress onto a full Level 2 specialist programme.

This is an exam and coursework-based qualification. The full qualifications and units from this qualification are graded at a pass, merit or
distinction. English and Maths resits will be assessed via a GCSE or Functional Skills exam.
