Course overview

Construction is everywhere and Milton Keynes is a hotspot for development. From housing, highways, warehousing and rail it is at the centre of the UK’s growing infrastructure, and you can be a part of it with our intermediate bricklaying course.

Construction is a lot more than just building, on our bricklaying course you’re learning to make homes for families, schools for children, hospitals for your community, and constantly improving and upgrading them as the industry develops.

What will I do?

From garden walls, to skyscrapers, this course will give you the foundation you need to get building. Covering everything from building basic masonry structures and cavity walling to construction technology, you will learn in a real life working environment both at the College and out in industry.

There will be opportunities for work experience within your bricklaying course too, with trips to working construction sites and visits from specialist guest speakers.

What’s next?

At the end of your bricklaying course you will have gained enough valuable work experience and industry contacts to kick off your career in the industry. You could also continue your studies, developing your skillset in your chosen trade.

Introduction to Construction
Construction is extremely varied and offers something for everyone – from carpenters, plasterers, decorators, electricians, and bricklayers, to engineers, surveyors and project managers. Beginning in an entry-level position you will have the chance to learn new skills and take on more advanced roles and maybe one day run your own construction firm. In construction, hard work pays off – after all, many company CEOs started out at the bottom.

How to get into the industry
The trades are highly skilled professions, but do not require high level qualifications. A vocational course and/or an apprenticeship are the best routes into these careers. The exceptions are surveying, architecture and so forth, where a degree is required, although these are possible via the apprenticeship route.

Application Journey

The application journey starts with researching your options to find the best course for you. From September, you can apply online. College interviews begin in November, giving you a chance to present yourself and learn more about our college. Discovery Days in July allow you to come on campus and get a real taste of college life. In August, you will receive your GCSE results, which are key for finalising your college placement. Enrolment then happens in August and September with your course beginning in September.
