Course overview
More and more people are going out to eat, and individually spend more than £4000 a year doing so. With over 12,000 hotels in the UK and 52,000 bars, pubs and clubs, it’s fair to say the industry is on the up and in need of talented individuals to keep these businesses running. A career in hospitality and events could span anything from travel and tourism, to event organisation, to planning and managing events.
What will I do?
The best way for you to develop your technical skills and learn what it takes to become a real chef is through practice and authentic work experience – which is exactly what you’ll get at Milton Keynes College. Kick off your career by working at one of the country’s most prestigious venues, Silverstone Circuits. Learning from professional staff, you will learn how the Hospitality industry works at its finest, including at the British Grand Prix where you will serve VIP guests. You will also experience life in a busy restaurant at The Brasserie, our award-winning on-site commercial restaurant which is open to the general public. You will try your hand at everything from serving customers to crafting bespoke menus. From barista training to supervising customer service, you will experience all different areas of the industry and receive first class support from our highly-experienced tutors, who will share their contacts and links with you.
What’s next?
Previous students have gone on to work at prestigious restaurants such as Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons, The Savoy, The Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva and The Lanesborough Hotel. You could use your work experience and contacts to step into a role at a restaurant, hotel or with a catering company. With the average person entering into a managerial role within hospitality before they are 30, opportunities for progression after College are great. You could also move onto an Apprenticeship to extend your skills and knowledge further.
Is it for me?
You must be able to take direction and work as a team, often in heated (literally) environments where you have a tight deadline to work to. You will also have a chance to hone your leadership skills and try out different roles, finding out what suits you. You must be a logical thinker, be reactive to situations and have a creative flair. You will have chances to enter national competitions, create your own dishes and menus, and gain the relevant skills and experience to help you stand out from the rest.
Entry requirements
You require GCSE maths and English with both at least Grade 4/C or above.
