Course overview
The Criminology Access to HE Diploma is designed for students who have not gained the traditional ‘A’level or BTEC entry qualifications for university.
It is ideal for students who have been out of education for an amount of time or are planning a career change. Key academic skills such as academic writing, referencing, research skills, evaluation and critical analysis are taught in preparation for the demands of university.
What will I do?
You will study a variety of units that cover criminal psychology, sociological perspectives, and criminological issues in our society. Additionally, you will carry out your own small research project in an area related to your intended career path.

What’s next?
Progression routes from this level 3 course can include entry to study for degree qualifications in areas such as: social work, adult social care, social policy, forensic psychology, criminology, criminal justice, sociology, youth support work or youth justice. You can also have entry to the HNC/D in Public Services
Is it for me?
This course is fast-paced and demanding. To be successful you will be required to be committed and self-motivated. You will be introduced to a great deal of new transferable skills in a variety of subject areas. Therefore, the need to be open to new experience is vital. However, you will be constantly supported and encouraged by experienced tutors.
Entry requirements
Students who are 18 years of age should have GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above. Students aged 19 or over do not require any formal maths or English qualifications. The Criminology Access to HE course includes obligatory maths and English units that are the equivalent of level 3 qualifications.
How will I be assessed?
A variety of assessments will be undertaken by students including essay, report, oral presentation, workbook, case study, exam and research project.
How much will I have to study each week?
Students will attend college for an average of three days per week. Independent study is also required at home. It is recommended that students should set aside at least 10-15 hours per week of self-study time.
How will my progress be monitored?
Written feedback is provided for each assignment, with attainment level and advice on how to improve further. Personal academic progress can be followed by students through the College’s Promonitor system. Students will have regular one-to-one progress reviews with an appointed tutor.
