Course overview

A career in Public Services relates to anything from the Police Force, Armed Forces, Emergency Services, and Prison Service. People in this industry have the important responsibility of keeping us safe, being the first to react to criminal activity and emergencies and keep order in society. A successful career in the services requires outstanding dedication, discipline and communication skills, but is incredibly rewarding.

What will I do?

You will develop a variety of transferable skills to prepare you for your next steps, ranging from research and study skills, to specific technical skills such as physical fitness, following service routine and health and safety. To get a real taste of the industry, you will participate in activities held at Caldecotte Lake which may include kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing and archery. You will have the opportunity to work with and learn from people who have worked within the Services, learning about their experiences and receiving advice.

What’s next?

This course is the perfect stepping stone to study Public Services Advanced, where you will receive guidance and encouragement to progress either to Higher Education or straight into the industry.

Is it for me?

If you’ve always had a desire to join any of the public services, this is an ideal place to kick off your career. You must have a tough character, and not be afraid to take on new and sometimes intimidating tasks. Leadership and team-work skills are essential, as you will often depend on your colleagues on the job. You must be able to follow instructions precisely, be respectful and act professionally at all times.

You require four GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including Maths and English.

How to get into the industry
Public Services careers span a range of occupations. Some of them, such as the police, are graduate roles and a university course or a degree apprenticeship are required. The Armed Forces offer more than 100 different roles – not just combat. With a degree, you can enter at officer level, but it is not essential and there are many excellent apprenticeships.

Application Journey

The application journey starts with researching your options to find the best course for you. From September, you can apply online. College interviews begin in November, giving you a chance to present yourself and learn more about our college. Discovery Days in July allow you to come on campus and get a real taste of college life. In August, you will receive your GCSE results, which are key for finalising your college placement. Enrolment then happens in August and September with your course beginning in September.
