What to expect during your transition to Milton Keynes College

How Milton Keynes College will support you

We understand that transitioning into college can be a challenging and overwhelming experience. At Milton Keynes College, we’re here to support you every step of the way. We will work closely with your current setting and local council and carefully review any EHCPs (if you have one) as part of a statutory process. This ensures we can meet your needs and that your placement here is positive for both you and others. Please remember to tick the EHCP box when you apply. If you don’t have an EHCP, simply tick the SEND need box, and we will reach out to ensure your needs are fully supported.

If you have an EHCP, this is part of what is statutorily known as the ‘consultation process’. You may either propose to your council that you wish to come here, or the council may suggest us as a suitable setting for you based on your plan.

We can only turn down an application for two reasons:

  1. The setting is unsuitable for the young person’s age, ability, aptitude, or SEN, or
  2. Placing the young person here would be incompatible with the efficient use of resources or the efficient education of others.

Therefore, it is crucial that your EHCP review from the past year accurately reflects your current needs and highlights any outdated behaviours or requirements.

If we believe we can meet your needs, we will contact you before you join to complete an initial assessment. While this might sound intimidating, it is not a test but rather a discussion to create a learning profile that documents your needs, what works best for your learning and performance, and strategies that are effective for your diagnosis and needs.

Further assessments, such as exam arrangements, will be conducted while you are with us and before you sit any exams. However, please be aware that some exams must adhere to work-ready standards, and there may not be opportunities for special arrangements in these cases.
