The Level 1 Award in Acting Skills and Directing & Devising Drama is a beginner-level course for people who are passionate about theatre, drama, and live performance. Whether you are completely new to the subject or already have some experience, this course will help you build the skills needed to act, direct, and devise your own drama pieces.
What will I do?
During the course, you’ll take part in both practical and theory-based sessions to understand how moving images are created and used acrossThroughout the course, you will take part in both practical workshops and theory-based activities to help you explore performance from the perspectives of both actor and director. You will learn how to develop characters, generate ideas, and lead others in creating performances.
You will gain a range of skills, including:
- Using vocal and movement techniques in performance
- Creating and developing characters for stage roles
- Performing short scenes and interacting with other performers and the audience
- Coming up with ideas and directing others in devised drama pieces
- Exploring techniques to build and shape drama creatively
The course includes hands-on projects where you will create and direct your own scenes. You will take part in workshops, group activities, and feedback sessions to help improve your confidence and performance technique.
Modules and projects will cover topics such as acting skills, character development, performance techniques, creative idea generation, directing, and reflection on your work.projects that give you experience in creating content for things like short films, adverts, and television. The course includes guided workshops and regular feedback to help you build confidence and improve your creative work.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through your digital portfolio, which includes your acting and directing work completed during the course. There are no written exams. You’ll receive regular tutor feedback to help you grow and improve throughout the course.
How much will I have to study each week?
You’ll attend college for 3 hours per week for hands-on sessions. You should also spend around 1.5 hours per week on independent study to document and reflect on your creative work.
