Course overview

Our Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering is designed for students who have completed an HNC and want to advance their engineering career. Combining advanced technical knowledge with practical and management skills, the course prepares you for employment in industry or progression to a BEng, BSc or professional qualification.

What will I do?

This Qualification is mapped to the Engineering Manufacturing Technician Occupational Standard.

The Units Studied are:

Unit 5002: Professional Engineering Management

Unit 5006: Further Mathematics

Unit 5007: Commercial Programming Software

Unit 5008: Distributed Control Systems

Unit 5010: Further Electrical Machines and Drives

Unit 5013: Embedded Systems

Unit 5014: Analogue Electronic Systems

Unit 5021: Further Control Systems Engineering

Teaching combines lecturer-led sessions, practical activities, case studies, independent research and industry-focused assignments to develop both your technical expertise and problem-solving abilities.

Alongside further engineering mathematics and engineering management, you will explore how mechanical, electrical and electronic systems integrate to create automated engineering solutions used throughout manufacturing, robotics, aerospace, automotive and other high-tech industries with a focus on industry 4.0

The course also develops project management, leadership and professional engineering skills through the study of engineering management, preparing you for technical and supervisory roles within industry.

On successful completion of this course you can either gain employment, study towards a BEng or BSc degree course or relevant professional qualifications.*

*The level of entry onto any subsequent degree will be based upon entry requirements from the individual university. Not all universities offer a top-up degree.

This course offers a strong sector-related emphasis on practical, academic & management skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding. Similarly, this is a pathway for those looking to progress onto a BEng or BSc.

Entry requirements

You should hold a full HNC (RQF) qualification and GCSEs at grade C/4 in English and Maths.
