What Is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid work-based training programme that combines practical on-the-job experience with structured learning, allowing you to earn a salary while gaining hands-on skills employers value.

In today’s fast-changing job market, developing real-world experience alongside recognised qualifications isn’t just beneficial — it’s essential. Apprenticeships provide a flexible route into employment or career progression, no matter your age or stage.

At Milton Keynes College, our wide range of apprenticeship programmes spans from Level 2 (intermediate) to Level 7 (degree level), meaning you can start at a level that suits your experience and goals while building a strong foundation for your future.

Who Can Apply?

  • Anyone aged 16+
  • Must live in England
  • Employed or willing to secure an apprenticeship role with an employer.
  • Able to meet the entry requirements for your chosen programme (some employers may accept lower grades if assessments indicate you can work at the required level).

Why an apprenticeship is great at any age

  • Earn as you learn: As an apprentice, you’re employed and receive a salary.
  • No tuition fees: Apprenticeships have no tuition costs, meaning you can avoid student debt – you’re entitled to student discounts too!
  • Career prospects: Improve your CV by gaining a recognised credential and a network of contacts in your chosen industry.
  • Work-based training: Learning takes place on the job, ensuring skills are up to date, in demand and immediately applicable.
  • Nationally recognised training: Gain qualifications that employers value and respect.
  • Supportive learning environment: Expert tutors and guidance every step of the way.
