Removing barriers to learning and supporting every learner to thrive
Milton Keynes College is focused on providing education that supports each learner to thrive, removing any barriers to learning they may face and supporting them with achieving positive outcomes.
Our inclusive offer provides accessible pathways for all students, including those with more pronounced barriers to learning through our innovative Futures Academy and Inclusive Learning programmes.
Maria Bowness, Group Director for Curriculum and Pedagogy at Milton Keynes College Group, said: “Futures Academy started because we’re aware that many learners that come to us are unsure of that they want to do. We support them to find their career goal by providing them with the opportunity to experience different industries, develop their employability skills and build their confidence”.
Holly Gidman, Head of School for Futures Academy and Care, elaborates on the inclusive approach taken: “Our approach is very personalised. We take the time to understand each student’s strengths, aspirations, and barriers they may face. Staff work closely with students to set realistic goals and regularly review their progress, celebrating successes along the way.”
Alfie Chapple is a student who has benefitted from Milton Keynes College’s inclusive approach to education. Alfie began his time at the College within the Inclusive Learning programme and progressed to Futures Academy, where he was able to explore his interests and passions while also gaining qualifications in English and maths.
Speaking about his experience at the College, Alfie said: “Futures Academy has helped me to become the person I am right now. Each day is different, and Futures Academy let me progress at my own pace”.
Alfie’s hard work, positive attitude and support for his peers earned Alfie recognition as Student of the Year for Futures Academy in May 2026.
Through Futures Academy, Alfie discovered a love for games design and will be progressing onto a Level 2 Games and Animation course at Milton Keynes College, which Alfie hopes will support him in his ambition to become a games developer.
Holly Gidman reflects on how Futures Academy supports learners’ prospects: “The most significant impact is often the transformation in students’ confidence and belief in themselves, by developing positive relationships with staff and peers, students start to recognise their own strengths and potential. They progress onto other courses within the College, apprenticeships, employment or other training and truly provide them with a Fairer Future.”
Through a tailored, supportive and inclusive approach to education, Milton Keynes College aims to support all learners to thrive, particularly those who may have previously faced challenges with accessing, remaining in and progressing through education. The College is committed to tackling barriers to learning locally, regionally, and nationally, and shaping social transformation for our communities through the power of education.
