Course overview

The Public Services HNC is a Level 4 higher education qualification for those who want to develop their understanding of the uniformed public services, with a strong focus on the criminal justice system.

This course is ideal for those interested in careers such as Police, Prison and Probation Services, Youth Offending Teams, Border Force, Armed Forces or third-sector organisations. It combines academic study with real-world experiences, helping you understand how public services operate while building the skills employers value.

The qualification also prepares you to progress onto the Level 5 HND in Public Services, which can later be topped up to a full degree.

What will I do?

You will study a range of modules that explore key public service topics while gaining first-hand insight through industry visits and professional engagement.

In addition to classroom learning on subjects such as substance misuse, modern warfare and counterterrorism, you will further your understanding through visits to the Emergency Services Show, HM Prisons, and by meeting professionals from organisations including the Police, Probation Services and Youth Offending Teams.

These experiences will help you decide on your future career path and give you a realistic understanding of working life within the services. All tutors have extensive professional experience and will share their industry knowledge throughout the course.

Modules include:

• Exploring Public Services
• Mental Health and Wellbeing
• Crime and Substance Misuse
• Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Ethics
• Terrorism and Counterterrorism
• Care in Custody
• Modern Warfare and Conflict
• Planning a Public Services Project

What’s next?

On successful completion, you can progress onto the HND in Public Services and continue towards a full Bachelor’s degree if you choose.

The course also supports entry into a variety of public service careers. Throughout your studies you will receive guidance on application routes, career options and professional development so you can make informed decisions about your next steps.

Is it for me?

This course is suitable if you want a career that contributes to public safety, justice and community protection, are disciplined and motivated, can work both independently and as part of a team, and have a genuine interest in criminal justice and public services. It is also ideal if you prefer a practical, career-focused alternative to traditional university routes.
