Course overview

It won’t be long until self-driving cars are a part of our every-day lives, but what they can’t do is make or repair themselves.

With over 39 million vehicles registered for use on UK roads, this means that there is and always will be a huge demand for mechanics and vehicle technicians.

Practical skills and logical thinking are required in the industry, along with patience and a determination to succeed.

What will I do?

You can expect to work on real cars in our motor vehicle workshop. You will learn how to assess and repair transmission, chassis and electrical systems, as well as look into engine technology. From fitting and removing body panels and electrical and trim components, you will also gain knowledge and skills in welding techniques and more. You will go on visits and trips such as the Automotive Industry Expo and the European Drag Racing Championships at Santa Pod.

What’s next?

The skills and experience you’ve gained could lead you to step straight into the workplace at a local garage, breakdown service provider or body repair shop.

You may want to expand your opportunities with a university-level qualification, or relevant course to start your own mobile mechanic business. There are also plenty of apprenticeships in the industry, where you could continue learning while you’re earning.

If you’ve got a love for high performance sports cars, have always got your head under a car bonnet, or appreciate classic vehicles, this could be the course for you.

As well as a love for everything to do with cars, a successful career in the industry also needs strong practical and problem-solving skills. The more experienced you become in dealing with different sorts of motors, the more opportunities will open up for you.

Entry requirements

You must have completed the Motor Vehicle Level 2 qualification and have GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade 4/E and M or above.

Application Journey

The application journey starts with researching your options to find the best course for you. From September, you can apply online. College interviews begin in November, giving you a chance to present yourself and learn more about our college. Discovery Days in July allow you to come on campus and get a real taste of college life. In August, you will receive your GCSE results, which are key for finalising your college placement. Enrolment then happens in August and September with your course beginning in September.
