Course overview
With 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, and this number expected to rise to over one million by 2025, dementia is a growing issue which impacts upon the individual as well those who support them. This course will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of dementia and its effects, by exploring the various types of dementia, the importance of early diagnosis, as well as focusing on person-centred approaches to dementia care.
What will I do?
This course is split into seven manageable units:
Unit 1: Understanding dementia
Unit 2: Understand how person-centred approaches are used to underpin the care and support of individuals with dementia
Unit 3: Principles of communication and interaction in dementia care and support
Unit 4: Supporting positive interaction, occupation and activity in dementia care
Unit 5: Principles of equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care and support
Unit 6: Understand how to support individuals with dementia to exercise choice and rights Unit 7: Principles of the administration of medication and well-being of individuals with dementia.

By undertaking this course, you will gain formal recognition by obtaining a nationally recognised qualification. This course is delivered online using our learning platform Equal. Students must have full use of either a PC or Laptop. You will need ongoing access to the Internet.
This course is ideal for those already employed in the health and social care sector who wish to upskill and develop their knowledge of dementia and dementia care or home carers.
You must already hold a L1 or equivalent English qualification.
Entry requirements
All applicants must be at least 19 years of age to enrol for the course and have a good level of English skills to a minimum of Level One standard. Applicants should ideally have already achieved the Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems.
Applicants aged 19-23 are only eligible for full funding if they have a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent but have not yet achieved a level 3 or above. Applicants aged 24+ must not have already achieved a Level 3 qualification or above. Please contact us for clarification if required.

How will I be assessed?
This course requires the completion and passing of seven short tutor marked online unit assessments. Learners are allocated a course tutor who will mark assessments and are able to offer support through the online learning platform.
How much will I have to study each week?
The course duration is 20 weeks and requires approximately 5-6 hours of study per week plus the submission of 7 short online assessments during the course. Course start dates are flexible, but learners are expected to successfully complete the programme within the allocated timescale.

Addition information
These courses are free for eligible applicants who successfully complete the programme. A fee of £90 will be charged to learners who enrol onto the programme but do not complete the course.
