Course overview
One in ten children have a diagnosable mental health condition, and 75% of mental health problems have begun by the age of 24. Mental ill health can affect a young person in every area of their life, including family, school, friendships, the workplace and the wider world. Mental ill health can be worsened by negative stereotypes and stigma from the media who portray mental illness as shameful and dangerous.
This free online children’s mental health course will equip learners with a detailed understanding of mental health conditions including depression and anxiety, the legislation and guidance surrounding mental health, risk factors that may affect mental well-being and how to build resilience against these, and the impact mental health concerns may have on young people and others.
What will I do?
This course is split into 5 manageable units:
Unit 1: Understand Children and Young People’s Mental Health in context
Unit 2: Understand factors which may affect Children and Young people’s Mental Health
Unit 3: Understand Children and Young People’s mental health concerns
Unit 4: Understand the impact of Children and Young People’s Health concerns
Unit 5: Understand how to support Children and Young People with Mental Health concerns
*Funding is subject to learners meeting set eligibility criteria; this may be discussed prior to the start of any course. Learners must be aged 19+ and have lived in the EU for the past three years. Please note that a withdrawal fee of £90 is payable if learners decide to withdraw from the course.

This online child mental health course is delivered online using our learning platform Equal. Students must have full use of either a PC or Laptop. You will need access to the Internet.
You must already hold a L1 or equivalent English qualification.
Entry requirements
All applicants must be at least 19 years of age to enrol for the course and have a good level of English skills to a minimum of Level One standard.
Applicants aged 19-23 are only eligible if they have already achieved a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent. Please contact us for clarification if required.
Applicants aged 24+ do not require any prior academic qualifications, but do need to meet the required standard of English skills. Applicants must have lived in the UK for the last three years, currently reside in England, with a postcode outside of London, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool, Tees Valley Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, West Midlands, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, West of England, Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Northumberland. Please contact providers in your local area for alternative options.
How much will I have to study each week?
The course duration is 6 weeks and will requires approximately 4 – 6 hours of study per week plus the submission of 5 online assessments during the course. Course start dates are flexible, but learners are expected to successfully complete the programme within the allocated timescale.
What kind of qualification is this?
Learners will receive a nationally recognised qualification by successfully completing this course. The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health is awarded by TQUK.
How will I be assessed?
This free course requires the completion and passing of five short tutor marked online unit assessments. Learners are allocated a course tutor who will mark assessments and are able to offer support through the online learning platform.
