The Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills will help develop knowledge and skills around counselling by looking at counselling theories, key elements of the main theoretical approaches and will help develop self-understanding and reflect on values and beliefs.  Successfully completing this qualification will help you to provide support and help to others.

What will I do?

To complete the Unit 4 assessment, learners will need to demonstrate how they can use core counselling skills in a helping relationship.  In order to be assessed carrying out this task, learners must demonstrate particular skills via either; a video recording submission, or an appropriate, qualified witness will be needed to observe the learner demonstrating the skills and completing a witness statement.

The qualification comprises of 4 Units:

Unit 1: Using counselling skills

Learn to identify core counselling skills alongside understanding how these are practised in a counselling relationship. Gain an understanding of how to establish an effective working relationship and will consider the boundaries which need to be respected in this sensitive role.

Unit 2: Introduction to counselling skills theories

This unit will introduce key elements of the main theoretical approaches in counselling, psychodynamics, person-centred therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. There are key practical differences between these theories and you will hone your skills in understanding the significant importance of counselling theory.

Unit 3: Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills

This unit covers the concepts of diversity and ethics. Gain an understanding of anti-discriminatory practice, discover the key aspects of an ethical framework, and discover ways to address diversity in counselling skills practice.

Unit 4: Counselling skills and personal development*

This unit encourages development of self-understanding, identifying values and beliefs and the ability to reflect on personal qualities and skills.

*Funding is subject to learners meeting set eligibility criteria; this may be discussed prior to the start of any course. Learners must be aged 19+ and have lived in the EU for the past three years. Please note that a withdrawal fee of £90 is payable if learners decide to withdraw from the course.

By undertaking this Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills course, you will gain knowledge and skills around counselling which you can apply both in the home and in the workplace.

Is it for me?

This course is suitable for learners aged 19 and above who are working or volunteering in an environment where they are helping and supporting others. This course is delivered online using our learning platform Equal. Students must have full use of either a PC or laptop and have full access to the internet to be able to utilise learning materials and to complete unit assessments.
You must already hold a L1 or equivalent English qualification.

This course requires the completion and passing of four short tutor marked online unit assessments. Learners are allocated a course tutor who will mark assessments and are able to offer support through the online learning platform.

The course duration is 8 weeks and will requires approximately 4 – 6 hours of study per week.

This course attracts funding for eligible students, so please check with the admissions team about your own circumstances. 

These courses are free for eligible applicants who successfully complete the course. A fee of £90 will be charged to learners who enrol onto the programme but do not complete the course.

Entry requirements

You must already hold a Level 1 or equivalent English qualification.

All applicants must be at least 19 years old as of the 31st of August to enrol for the course and have a good level of English skills to a minimum of Level One standard.

Applicants aged 19-23 are only eligible if they have already achieved a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent. Please contact us for clarification if required.

Applicants aged 24+ do not require any prior academic qualifications, but do need to meet the required standard of English skills. Applicants must have lived in the UK for the last three years, currently reside in England, with a postcode outside of London, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool, Tees Valley Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, West Midlands, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, West of England, Newcastle Upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Northumberland.
