
Course overview
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is a great starting point if you’re thinking about becoming a teacher or trainer.
You’ll learn the essential skills and knowledge needed to deliver lessons in a classroom or training environment, within further education or the workplace.
The course covers the basics of teaching, including planning sessions, supporting different types of learners, assessing progress and creating a safe and positive learning space.
What will I do?
You’ll build the practical skills needed to teach with confidence and support learners effectively.
You will learn how to:
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons
- Support learners with different needs
- Manage behaviour positively in the classroom
- Create a safe and inclusive learning environment
- Assess learning and give helpful feedback
What’s next?
This course is the first step into teaching and training. After completing it, you could progress to:
- Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
- Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education & Skills)
- Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate in Education
You could also move into roles such as:
- Further education or adult learning teacher
- Workplace or corporate trainer
- Community education tutor
- Private or freelance tutor
- Vocational trainer (if you have industry experience)
- Teaching English as a Foreign Language (with an additional TEFL qualification)

Entry requirements
Applicants should provide positive reference or recommendation from their employer and demonstrate a commitment to how the course will help with their teaching endeavours.
Grade 2 or above in English and/or Maths recommended but not essential.
How will I be assessed?
You will complete:
- 3 short units
- Written assignments
- One micro-teach session (15–30 minutes) where you deliver a short lesson
How will my progress be monitored?
Your tutor will support you throughout the course with:
- Ongoing progress reviews
- Regular feedback in class
- Comments on your written work
- Guidance on how to improve
How much will I have to study each week?
Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 48 hours
Total Qualification Time (TQT): 120 hours
