Course overview

This course is designed for those who want to start or grow a career as a Teaching Assistant. You’ll build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to support teachers and help children and young people learn and thrive in the classroom. It’s a great starting point if you’re looking to get into education or gain a recognised qualification for your current role.

What will I do?

You’ll study 12 key units that cover everything you need to know about working as a teaching assistant. As part of the course, you’ll also need to complete 300 hours of work or volunteering in an educational setting. This could be a nursery, school, college or university. If you’re not already working in one, you’ll need to arrange your own placement.

You’ll learn about:

  • Creating safe, engaging learning environments
  • Supporting learning and promoting independence
  • Child development and wellbeing
  • Safeguarding and safe practices
  • Encouraging positive behaviour
  • Working with teachers and other professionals

What’s next?

Once you finish this course, you can apply for teaching assistant jobs or move onto further study.

Is it for me?

This course is ideal if:

  • You’re motivated to develop your skills and progress in your career
  • You want to work with children or young people
  • You’re already working in education and want a formal qualification
  • You’re patient, supportive, and enjoy helping others learn

Entry requirements

No previous qualifications or experience are needed to join. You’ll take an initial assessment to make sure the course is the right level for you.

  • Learn from experienced tutors with a background in education
  • Gain 300 hours of real-life experience in a school or educational setting
  • Flexible part-time study designed for adult learners
  • Support with finding a placement if needed
  • Practical skills to boost your job prospects in education
  • Progression routes into jobs, apprenticeships or university

You’ll get regular feedback through assignments and one-to-one support. Your placement supervisor will also complete observations to see how you’re doing in a real setting.

You’ll be assessed in a range of ways including:

  • Professional discussions with your tutor
  • Written assignments
  • Practical observations at your placement
  • Presentations

You’ll need to dedicate at least 3 hours a week to complete the course, plus time on your placement. This includes independent study, assignments, and any group sessions.
