Course overview

This course will teach you how to safely carry out routine maintenance and repairs on electric and hybrid vehicles. You won’t work on high-voltage systems, but you’ll learn everything else needed to keep these vehicles running smoothly.

What will I do?

You’ll gain hands-on experience working with electric and hybrid vehicles. You’ll learn how to spot safety issues, carry out regular checks, and do basic repairs (not involving high-voltage parts).

Modules and topics include:

  • Workshop-based practical sessions
  • Introduction to electric and hybrid vehicle systems
  • Safety procedures and tools
  • Routine servicing and maintenance
  • Identifying and fixing basic faults

After this course, you can move on to:

  • Level 3 Award – learn to work with high-voltage systems
  • Level 4 Award – advanced diagnostics and repairs

Entry requirements

  • A Level 2 Motor Vehicle qualification
  • Aged 18 or over
  • At least two GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above
  • Some basic knowledge of cars or electronics is helpful
  • Learn how to safely work with electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Gain a nationally recognised qualification
  • Hands-on experience in our modern motor vehicle workshop
  • Training from expert tutors with real industry experience

We’ll give you regular feedback so you know how you’re doing. Tutors will check your progress through practical work and short reviews to help you stay on track.

You’ll be assessed through:

  • An online multiple-choice test
  • A practical test in the workshop

You’ll be in college 1 day a week for 7.5 hours. Most of the work is done during the day, so you won’t need to do much outside studying.
