Course overview

The Social Sciences Access to HE Diploma explores subjects like sociology, health studies, psychology, criminology, and psychopathology, preparing you for various higher education pathways in humanities and social sciences.

What will I do?

The Social Sciences Access To HE Diploma course covers a variety of topics in different modules, including:

  • Sociology; the history of welfare in the UK, How the British state functions and deals with issues, Poverty and safeguarding.
  • Health Studies; Developing professional practice in healthcare, health promotion, introduction to safeguarding.
  • Social & Developmental Psychology; How and why human beings change over the course of their life.
  • Criminology; What makes some people commit certain crimes?
  • Psychopathology; The scientific study of mental disorders, including studying the social, genetic and biological causes.

You will also study:

  • Further skills
  • Communicating through speaking and listening
  • Reading and writing skills
  • Application of numbers using calculation
  • Application of numbers using data interpretation

What’s next?

The options of what you could go on to do after completion of the Social Sciences Access To HE Diploma are extremely broad. You could go on to a degree course in any Humanities based subject that you are passionate about, including sociology, history, psychology, and many more. Most students progress to higher education in a range of subjects such as Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Education – Teaching or Early Years, Criminology, Law, Accounting, Marketing and Business Studies.

Is it for me?

Social Sciences Access To HE Diploma is for students aged 19 or over when the course begins who wish to progress onto Higher Education in a Social Sciences related topic.

Entry requirements

Ideally, you will require a Level 2 English and a Level 2 Maths qualification to join one of our Social Sciences Access To HE Diploma course programmes. Entry will be dependent upon a review of previous qualifications in addition to a literacy and numeracy assessment undertaken at interview.

Your progress is regularly monitored through 1:1 tutorials and assessment of class work and homework. You will have a Personal Tutor who will support you with your studies.

Assessment is continuous and you will be required to submit a portfolio of coursework for each unit by the end of the Social Sciences Access To HE Diploma course. We use a range of assessment methods, including class exercises, formal written assignments and tutor records of performance during class discussions and presentations. There will be some end of unit examinations.

Students will have 10.5 hours in face to face lessons and there is the expectation that 8 to 10 hours private study for the development of course work.

You will need to provide your own stationery (notepad, pen, additional equipment for Maths etc.).
