Dan Burton
After overcoming a number of challenges to complete his Level 2 Carpentry apprenticeship, Dan Burton, 24, is now in a career with a bright future. His journey is proof that the apprenticeship route, combined with determination, is a path for success.
Dan’s Story
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I left school. Before starting the apprenticeship, I worked as a delivery driver for Tesco and Ocado. I’ve always been a physical guy, and even considered joining the army. That’s why I thought pursuing a trade would be a perfect fit for me.
At first, I considered just getting a job and learning as I go. But then I realised that with an apprenticeship, I could work and learn, and earn a qualification at the end. When I visited the college website and found the carpentry apprenticeship advertised, that made the decision for me. Working four days a week suited me better than being in college full-time, because I learn the most when I’m actually at work.
I now work for a company called Go Large Design and Build. We handle all sorts of projects, from renovations to new builds. It’s a brilliant company to work with.
I actually started my apprenticeship with different employer, but then they went bust. When the company folded, it left me unemployed for a bit.
I quickly jumped on Google to find other local companies to continue my apprenticeship with. I reached out to Go Large and explained the whole situation to them. I could’ve easily given up, but I was already halfway in, and I wanted to finish what I started. It was a tough time, but I managed to overcome it.
I realised you’ve got to be proactive. You can’t just sit around waiting for things to happen. That’s what I realised I was doing before. I’ve got a few friends in the trade who I was relying on to help me find work, but at the end of the day, the only person who’s going to help you get where you want to go is yourself.
My greatest achievement since starting my apprenticeship is passing it! That’s the truth. I completed it last August. My tutor, Brendan, he was really helpful. He played a big part in helping me pass in the end.
I’m now a permanent employee with Go Large, so plan to stay where I am for now. Then in a few years, I’d like to start my own business. Maybe I’ll even have my own team of employees one day!”
Dan’s advice to anyone considering apprenticeships:
“I definitely recommend the apprenticeship route, no doubt about it. You learn so much when you’re actually on the job. It’s hands-on, practical, and you’re right in the thick of things. That’s where the real learning happens.”
