What Comes Next? Progression Opportunities for Students
As we approach the end of the academic year, many students are finalising plans for next year – whether that is moving up a level on their current college programme, exploring an apprenticeship, moving on to a university-level course, or following a different career pathway altogether.
In this blog, we speak with Louise James, Milton Keynes College’s Deputy Director – Curriculum, to find out more about how parents can support their young person in taking the next step.
Q. What is the current position with applications for next year?
Most students who wish to continue their studies with us next year have already submitted their applications, following our internal progression deadline of 30 April.
However, there is still time for students who have not yet applied, or who are considering a change of direction. We know that deciding what to do next is not always straightforward. While many students have a clear progression route in mind, others are still weighing up their options. Whatever their circumstances, support is available.
Q. What is the internal progression process?
Now that the main application process is complete, our focus is on supporting students in implementing their progression plans.
· Students who are moving from one school within the College to another are currently doing progression interviews. These discussions help ensure they are applying for the right course and understand what is involved.
· For students progressing to the next level within their current school, the process is usually more straightforward, but they will still receive guidance and support throughout.
Following progression discussions, students will receive a formal offer letter outlining any conditions attached to their place. These conditions are not always based just on grades. They may also include expectations around attendance, engagement, behaviour, or other targets that help ensure students are ready to succeed in their next course. Parents play a key role in supporting these expectations at home by helping students stay focused and on track as they prepare for their next step.
Q. What support is available for students who are still undecided?
If your young person is still unsure about their next step, we encourage them to speak to their tutor or request a careers appointment. Our careers team can provide impartial advice and help students explore the full range of options available to them.
Students can also submit a new application if they would like to explore an alternative course. The process is very much student-led. Once students tell us what they would like to do, we can tailor our advice and support to help them achieve their goals.
Q. When can students confirm their plans for next year?
Looking ahead to enrolment, students may be able to secure their place before the summer break, especially if they do not need English and maths results to progress. Students who are waiting for English and maths results will complete enrolment once those results are available on GCSE results day in August.
Q. What support will be available around enrolment?
To support students during this period, dedicated advisory days will take place before the start of the new academic year. Places on the first two advisory days on 20th and 21st August will be prioritised for students who have already applied and those progressing within the College. These events provide an opportunity to confirm enrolment, ask questions, and prepare for the year ahead.
For students who do not achieve the English and maths grades they need, advisory days will also offer the chance to explore alternative progression routes. These students continue to study English and maths alongside their main programme, and our teams will work closely with them to identify the most appropriate options.
Q. Any last words of advice for parents?
Try not to worry. There is still time for students to review their plans, seek advice and explore new opportunities.
If your young person would benefit from additional guidance, please encourage them to speak with their tutor, contact the careers team, or visit the College website to find out more about the courses and pathways available.
