Currently working as a construction apprentice at Clancy, with the hopes to become a full time Ganger (someone who is responsible for co-ordinating and supervising the work within their own gang, ensuring that all work is carried out safely and to programme) for the company, Rhys, 19, tells us all about how his apprenticeship is going.

Meet Rhys

I chose to study for this apprenticeship because I wanted to get into a career that was physical and demanding, as well as a career that requires you to really work, be sociable and use your brain. This apprenticeship was recommended to me by a peer, and it just ticked all the boxes. It was exactly what I was looking for and it will open so many doors for me once I finish the qualification.

My greatest achievement so far during my apprenticeship working for Clancy would definitely be the improvement I’ve had in my confidence. When I first started my apprenticeship, I had no experience or understanding of the industry, but now I have the confidence to speak up and give ideas or suggest different methods in which a job could be completed. It’s a good feeling, and it shows to both myself and my employer that all the information I’ve been learning has really sunk in!

The teaching on the course has been great. My teacher is the best teacher I’ve ever had throughout my time in education, as they have a strong background in the construction industry. All the work that is set for us students is relevant to the job and I’m provided with everything I need to have the best chance at excelling in my exams.

A typical day on the job involves waking up at around 6:30am, to then get ready and head to the yard for 7:30, and I’ll then check to see who I’m working with. Then, I go with my team to the job, which can be anything water related from changing a meter box, to cutting a part of a main out and replacing it. Every day is different and holds a new challenge.

If you’re considering a construction apprenticeship, my advice would be to work hard and show that you want it!
