Supporting Students’ Progression: Why Attendance and English & Maths Matter

At MK College, helping students take their next steps is at the heart of everything we do.

In this blog post, Maria Bowness, Group Director for Curriculum Innovation and Pedagogy, explains why doing well in English and Maths, and attending lessons regularly, are two of the most important factors in student success — and what parents need to know to help.

Why English and Maths Matter for Progression

English and Maths are essential for progression, so we encourage every student to give them their best effort. Students need a grade 4 or above in both subjects to move on, whether that’s onto a higher-level course, an apprenticeship, or further education. These subjects really are just as important – if not more so – than the vocational parts of their programme.

English and Maths in the Workplace

Employers consistently tell us that strong English and Maths skills are key in the workplace. They are essential for literacy, numeracy, communication, and problem-solving. Doing well in English and Maths opens doors, while not achieving can limit their future options across nearly every sector. Students who achieve a grade 4 or above in these subjects usually have higher earning potential. Research from the Department for Education shows that students who reach grade 4 or above in English and Maths could expect to earn around £23,000 more over their lifetime than those who don’t – so it really is worth putting in the effort.

If a Student Hasn’t Achieved Grade 4 Yet

If a student hasn’t reached a grade 4 in English or Maths, they will continue studying either through GCSEs or Functional Skills. At college, we provide plenty of support, including focused lessons, extra resources, and one-to-one guidance, so everyone has the chance to improve and gain the grade they deserve.

Why Good Attendance is Key

As well as achieving in English and Maths, attendance is central to success in any course. Students who miss lessons regularly will struggle to gain the knowledge and skills needed to complete qualifications, which can directly affect progression. For example, students on Level 1 or 2 courses who don’t attend well may have limited opportunities to move on to a higher level course or apprenticeship.

At college, we monitor attendance closely and work with students and their parents or carers to improve it. Parents can check attendance through our Parents’ Portal and will be notified by text if there are concerns. This helps parents stay informed and support their student’s progress. We recommend parents reach out early if they notice any issues, so we can work together to find solutions. Course team leaders and Heads of School are always happy to discuss how best to support a student and make the right decisions for their next steps.

If attendance or other issues are affecting a student’s progress, they can also contact our Student Support team at ineedsupport@mkcollege.ac.uk. With the right support, guidance, and communication between parents and the college, we aim to ensure every student has the support they need to reach their potential and take confident steps into the future.
