MK College launches ‘The Space’ to support student wellbeing

MK College has launched a new initiative called The Space to offer students a calm, welcoming area when they feel overwhelmed or simply need time to reset.

Introduced at the beginning of November, The Space is already proving popular with students across both campuses.

The idea was developed by the College’s Student Engagement Mentor, Aaliyah Aries, supported by Enrichment Co-ordinator, Jessica Frohawk-McLucas, after students fed back that they wished there was somewhere quiet to relax between lessons.

Aaliyah explained, “The canteen and other social spaces can be quite loud and busy, so for some of our students, college can be an overwhelming place to be. Being able to provide a safe space on campus where students can go on their break between classes is really important.

“We know that for many, just a short period of time can be enough to feel calmer and less overwhelmed, and this can make all the difference in their learning and help them to remain at college.

“Some students come to chill out, charge their phones, play with fidgets and take a break from the hustle and bustle. Others come for the clubs and activities, or to chat with friends. It’s about having a sense of community within college. That’s the main goal.”

She added, “The students we’ve met so far are really enjoying it. They’ve even helped us create our own Spotify playlist, called ‘The Space’, which they can add to. There are also a few different clubs and societies now running from The Space, including Knitting and Crocheting, Art, and Dungeons and Dragons.”

Aaliyah says demand is growing.“We know there is a real need for it. We want to see more students using it, especially those who would benefit from meeting new people or trying something new. We’re hoping it will continue to grow. There have already been some lovely friendships formed and plenty of small success stories.”

The Space is particularly helpful for students with anxiety, sensory needs, or other additional needs. “They don’t have to get involved in the clubs if they don’t want to. Even if they just want to come and sit and eat their lunch, it’s a calm space away from the crowds.”

Because The Space is always staffed, students can also be signposted to internal support teams if needed. “We have a member of the autism mentor team pop in most weeks, as well as other staff visitors including TAs. We’re also hoping to arrange wellbeing workshops with our Wellbeing Team soon.”

The Space runs in a classroom on both campuses and is open every Friday from 11am to 2pm.

The College is inviting donations of board games and other items to help enhance The Space. Contributions can be sent in with students and dropped off at room J11 or at College Reception.
