Course overview
It’s a beginner-level course that covers the essentials of fashion design and garment making. You’ll learn how to use key fashion terms, identify different fabrics, and explore how colours work together. You’ll also practise creating fashion drawings, learn how clothes are made, and gain an understanding of how the fashion production process works. The course will also introduce you to key job roles in the fashion industry. If you’re new to fashion design and want to build your creative skills, this is the perfect place to start.
What will I do?
You’ll gain hands-on experience with:
- Learn fashion design terminology and how to use it correctly
- Identify natural and synthetic fabrics, as well as common haberdashery items
- Explore colour relationships by creating colour wheels and understanding primary, secondary, and tertiary colours
- Study how garments are made through stitching, tailoring, and knitting techniques
- Practice fashion illustration, including flat drawings using templates and specific drawing methods

By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills to confidently create your own fashion designs. These skills can support your journey into freelance work, starting your own fashion business, or developing your creative fashion portfolio. Course Highlights
You’ll have the chance to work in our specialist Fashion and Textiles studios, using industry-standard software and equipment. Our experienced tutors, who have worked in the fashion industry, will support and guide you throughout the course.
How will my progress be monitored?
You’ll get regular verbal feedback during sessions. You’ll also receive written feedback halfway through and again at the end of the course to help you improve your creative work.
How will I be assessed?
You’ll be assessed through a digital portfolio that shows your creative work.
How much will I have to study each week?
You’ll be in college for 3 hours a week for practical sessions. You’ll also need to spend around 1.5 hours a week doing independent study to document and develop your work.
