During this course, you’ll build important skills like English, Maths, and how to prepare for work. You’ll also learn how to study well and get ready for your next steps in education or employment.
What will I do?
On this course, you’ll:
- Improve your English and Maths – If you haven’t yet achieved a Grade 4 (or equivalent), you’ll keep studying these subjects. Depending on your level, this might include GCSE resits or Functional Skills qualifications. You’ll also explore how maths and communication skills are used at work.
- Develop key employability skills – You’ll work on skills that employers value, like teamwork, problem-solving, and communication.
- Grow your personal skills – Personal Development sessions help you learn how to stay safe and healthy, be a responsible citizen, and plan for your future.
- Boost your study skills – You’ll practice research, writing assignments, and other study techniques that will help you progress.
What’s next?
When you finish this course, you could:
- Move up to a Level 1 or Level 2 Skills Academy vocational course
- Progress to other Level 2 courses at College
- Start a Level 2 Apprenticeship
- Find a job in an entry-level role
To progress further, you’ll need to show commitment to your studies and improvement in your English and Maths.

Entry requirements
Level 2 Skills Academy: Grade 3 in English and Maths or Level 1 Functional Skills, plus other GCSEs or vocational qualifications showing you’re ready for Level 2.
Level 1 Skills Academy: Grade 2 in English and Maths or Entry 3 Functional Skills, plus other qualifications showing you’re ready for Level 1.
Entry 3 Skills Academy: Grade 1 in English and Maths or Entry 2 Functional Skills, plus other qualifications showing readiness for Entry 3.

We’ll support you every step of the way by:
- Checking your attendance, punctuality, and participation

How much will I have to study each week?
You’ll usually be in College 3 days per week for about 17 hours total. To stay on the course, you’ll need to attend all your sessions.
How will I be assessed?
- English and Maths are assessed through exams.
- Other course units are assessed with coursework, practical activities, and portfolios of your work.
Work experience
While on the course, you’ll:
- Get ready for real work experience through employability and personal development sessions
- Take part in employer-led projects
- Have chances to meet employers and learn about different careers
- Be supported in finding virtual or in-person work experience opportunities
