Apprenticeship Interview Tips

Once you have applied for an Apprenticeship at Milton Keynes College, the Apprenticeship team will review your application, and assess why you’re interested in the apprenticeship role. If you meet the employer/entry criteria you will be invited to have a conversation with us to find out more about you. At interview you can get a feel for the role, ask any questions, and discuss next steps.

We then send the employer your application to review and wait to see if you have been shortlisted. If your application is shortlisted, you’ll be invited for an interview with the employer.

If you are shortlisted for an interview with the employer offering the role, you need to do some preparations to ensure you come across in the most positive light and stand out from the crowd.

  1. Research the company: Before the interview, gather information about the company’s history, mission, and values. This will help you demonstrate your interest and knowledge during the interview.
  2. Review the job description: Understand the specific skills and qualifications required for the apprenticeship position. Make sure you can offer examples and experiences that align with the requirements.
  3. Prepare relevant questions: Show your enthusiasm and interest in the role by preparing thoughtful questions about the apprenticeship, the company culture, or any specific projects you may be involved in.
  4. Practice common interview questions: While you cannot predict every question, it is helpful to practice common interview questions such as “Tell me about yourself” or “Why are you interested in this apprenticeship?”
  5. Be prepared to discuss your skills and experiences: Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and accomplishments that make you a strong candidate for the apprenticeship. Include examples of how you have demonstrated these skills in previous roles or projects.
  6. Showcase your willingness to learn: Emphasise your motivation to learn and grow during the apprenticeship. Discuss any steps you have taken to develop your skills or knowledge independently.
  7. Dress appropriately: Whilst some interviews are conducted over the phone, it will help you to dress professionally for the interview, even if the company has a casual dress code. This helps make a positive first impression and to make you feel prepared and professional.
  8. Arrive early: If the interview is in person, plan your route to the interview location, allowing extra time for any unforeseen delays. Arriving early shows punctuality and reliability. If the interview is conducted via phone or on teams ensure you answer the call and are ready and prepared to start before the interview starts.
  9. Display good body language: Maintain eye contact, sit up straight, and speak clearly during the interview. Positive body language demonstrates confidence and engagement.
  10. Follow up with a thank you note: After the interview, send a personalised thank you email to express your gratitude for the opportunity. Reiterate your interest and briefly highlight why you think you are a good fit for the apprenticeship.
