Leyton Francis, Purchasing Manager for Heath Electrical Services, says MK College has helped them find their best apprentices despite an industry-wide recruitment struggle.

Heath Electrical had already been sourcing apprentices through MK College and partnering together for electrical testing days for students in the past, but they decided to cement a closer partnership to help with their challenges in recruiting.

Leyton explains, “They approached us about working more closely together, so we had a tour of the college, and I was genuinely quite blown away by the set-up and how they’re looking to push forward.

“We’ve been on the hunt for good engineers on the gas side and electrical side, so it’s heartwarming to see the effort that’s going in to produce a new generation of workers. The whole industry is struggling; just to see the work they are doing gives us the motivation to work more closely with the college.”

Based in Milton Keynes, Heath Electrical offer a wide range of domestic and commercial electrical services and has employed a number of apprentices through their partnership with MK College.

Leyton adds that working with the College has been really straightforward. He said, “It’s seamless, to be honest. On every scale, it just flows very well. It hasn’t taken any of my time – a phone call and something is sorted. It’s time saving and communication has always been great. The apprentices we have taken from MK College have been the best ones, and they’re the ones that have lasted. Whatever they’re doing, it’s working.”

When asked what advice he’d give to other businesses working with MK College, he said, “If they want the best apprentices, I’d go to them, as they have the highest quality training. I wish they were there 10 to 15 years ago. We’d have a fleet of workers trained to this standard, and if that could be mirrored across the country, our infrastructure would be so much better.”
