Whether you are interested in a fine art or professional pathway, this intensive and demanding course will provide you with the key technical and communication skills needed for a rewarding career in this visual and creative area of Art and Design.
What will I do?
From understanding and demonstrating various photographic practices, to taking on contextual studies, to experimenting with different methods of lighting, you will become a well-rounded photographer with an impressive portfolio to prove your talents to employers. You will focus on different techniques and processes, communication in art and design and work on individual projects. Learning from industry experienced professionals, you will have access to our specialist studios, and benefit from links with local businesses, including wedding photography, galleries and studio photography.
Upon successful completion you will be encouraged to consider ‘topping-up’ your HNCs to the HND level 5 qualification in Photography.*Successful enrolment on the HND will be based on outcome and will be dependent on numbers.*
You will also be able to consider seeking commercial commissions as a photographer in editorial, press, advertising or fashion-related fields. You could also work as a photographic assistant or with picture/design agencies or photo libraries.
Is it for me?
This course is appropriate for independent learners with a knowledge of art and design and creative practice. You may also have worked in the industry or studied in this area previously.
ARE THERE ANY ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
You require 96 UCAS tariff points and GCSEs at grade C/4 in English & Maths.
Mature students without these formal qualifications are welcome to apply; acceptance onto the course will be subject to a portfolio interview.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
You will be assessed through a variety of methods throughout the course, including discussion, assignments, written tasks, presentations and practical. Assignments will be industry linked and designed for the working photographer. They are designed to allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of the subjects, broaden your core skills in photography practice and develop your personal and professional approach to your work.
HOW WILL MY PROGRESS BE MONITORED?
Your progress is monitored through regular one to one tutorials and assessment of project work. You will also have a Personal Tutor who will support you with your studies.
WHAT LEVEL IS THIS QUALIFICATION?
This qualification is at level 4, you will gain a Higher National Certificate in Photography.
HOW MUCH WILL I HAVE TO STUDY EACH WEEK?
You should be prepared to study for around 20 hours per week. Approximately 10 of these will be taught sessions at college, the rest will be online and self directed study to be completed in your own time.
