INTRODUCTION

Do you have a genuine interest in graphic design and are you willing to work hard and show dedication to the subject? Whether you are interested in a fine art or professional pathway, this intensive and demanding course offers the key technical and visual communication skills for both academic and career routes in graphic design.

What will I do?

The subjects studied are broad-based and cut across all areas of art and design. The HND consists of eight modules in total, four of which are mandatory. These include:

  • Art direction for advertising
  • Advertising campaigns
  • Advanced typographic design
  • Visual communication in Graphic Design
  • Communication with images in Art and Design
  • Work-based experience
  • Packaging in Graphic Design
  • Professional studies in Art and Design

What’s next?

Upon successful completion you will be encouraged to consider ‘topping-up’ your HNDs to the final year of a graphic design degree, subject to selected University criteria. *The level of entry onto to any subsequent degree will be based upon your outcome and profile on the HND and the ongoing university entry requirement. Final year top-up cannot be guaranteed*


You will also be able to consider employment in a graphic design-related field, with options including working as an animator, technical illustrator, storyboard artist, advertising designer or an illustrator for graphic novels.

Whether your passions lie in animation, illustration or advertising, you will become fully-skilled in a variety of different areas, preparing you for what comes next when you’re working in the industry. You must be able to dedicate your time and energy into developing your skills, both professionally and personally.

ARE THERE ANY ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

You require a HNC (or equivalent) in Graphic Design and GCSEs at grade C/4 in English & Maths.

Mature candidates will be considered on an individual basis.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through a variety of methods throughout the course, including discussion, assignments, written tasks, presentations and practical. Assignments will be industry linked. They are designed to allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of the subjects, broaden your core skills in graphic design practice and develop your personal and professional approach to your work.

HOW WILL MY PROGRESS BE MONITORED?

Student progress is monitored through regular one-to-one tutorials and regular assessment of project work. You will also have a Personal Tutor who will support you with your studies.

WHAT LEVEL IS THIS QUALIFICATION?

This qualification is at level 5, you will gain a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design.

HOW MUCH WILL I HAVE TO STUDY EACH WEEK?

The part time HND is available over 2 years to fit in with your other commitments, such as family and work. This will consist of I day and I evening per week.
