Access to HE Diploma in Art & Design
INTRODUCTION
Our one-year qualification will give students the opportunity to progress to University and pursue courses such as HNC Art Practice, Graphic Design and Photography.
The sessions are taught by specialised post-16 teachers and professionals with a wealth of knowledge in their subjects. We provide a first-class teaching environment with a range of specialist equipment including a printmaking studio, sculpture studio, photography dark room, and more.
Each student has access to their own dedicated studio space to work in and the chance to exhibit their work. In addition, there are educational visits with guest speakers to supplement learning, as well as support with student finance, UCAS applications and individual needs.
This course is for students aged 19 when the course begins who wish to progress onto Higher Education.
Please note: The course will accept people at aged 18 if they have both English and maths at grade C or 4 or Functional Skills Level 2.
What will I do?
You will study four modules:

- Drawing – research and practice
- Painting – research and practice
- Printmaking as a visual art form
- Understanding and producing 3D sculpture
- Critical studies in art and design
- Develop critical thinking and writing for art and design practice
- Project proposal for art and design practice
- Reflection and evaluation for art and design practice

What’s next?
If you don’t have any formal qualifications but are looking to go to University, this course is specifically tailored towards you. As well as the course content, you will learn certain academic skills that are essential at University level, including Harvard referencing and essay writing.
By successfully completing the Art and Design Access to HE course, you will find that many universities, including Milton Keynes College (HNC/D) will welcome you to further your higher education by means of a degree course.
Is it for me?
This one year course is aimed at mature students (19+) who wish to develop their creative practice (both practical and academic) and aspire to progress to a degree level qualification, either at Milton Keynes College (HNC/D) or a university.
Entry Requirements
Ideally, you will require a Level 2 English and a Level 2 Maths qualification to join one of our Access to Higher Education Diploma course programmes. Entry will be dependent upon a review of previous qualifications in addition to a literacy and numeracy assessment undertaken at interview. In addition, you will need a portfolio of creative work to share at interview to show your passion and interest for the course.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Assessment is continuous and you will be required to submit a portfolio of coursework for each unit by the end of the course. We use a range of assessment methods, including practical experimentation, portfolio development/creation, final outcomes, class exercises, formal written assignments and tutor records of performance during class discussions and presentations.
HOW WILL MY PROGRESS BE MONITORED?
Your progress is regularly monitored through 1:1 tutorials and assessment of studio work and independent study. You will have a Personal Tutor who will support you with your studies.
WHAT LEVEL IS THIS QUALIFICATION?
This is a Level 3 qualification and is delivered over one year.
HOW MUCH WILL I HAVE TO STUDY EACH WEEK?
Students will have 10.5 hours of tutor contact per week, delivered through workshops, 1-1s, group critiques, taught sessions and studio practice. In addition, there is an expectation that you will work independently in your studio space for 10 hours per week to develop your work further.
DO I NEED TO PURCHASE ANYTHING?
You will need to have access to IT equipment. In addition, you will be required to purchase materials and resources to develop your creative practical work throughout the course. Students have access to an on-site art shop, which sells art materials at a very competitive price.
