Jake’s Blog: One man, one week, two assignments
I’m back and I’ve survived my first week of my HNC Computing course. To summarise the last week in three words – overwhelming, challenging and exciting.
The only thing I can liken it to is when you go to a music festival and you spend the first hour trying to get used to your surroundings.
To be honest I don’t know what I was expecting, with week 1 done and 2 assignments on the go already. I suppose it is a Level 4 HNC course, the lecturers weren’t going to ease us in gently, were they?
This was something that I quickly learnt after returning home on the first evening of the course and struggled to switch my brain off thanks to information overload. Not to mention not having a clue where to start when it came to planning for my first assignment, which by the way is to plan a training event about Amazon Web Services. To try and get a handle on the training topic, I spent the following day researching anything and everything useful.
Reflecting back on the week, you might be wandering what have I taken from it? To manage my time well and ask for help when I need it, despite the size of the assignments. Just keep chipping away at them and break them down in to small sections. I found a good way of doing this is by writing myself a to-do list relating to different aspects of the assignments.
To anyone else who has started their academic studies this past week, or maybe even a new job, the first week is always the hardest, and the only way is up.
I’ll be back with an update on how I’m progressing with my assignments, and make sure you keep an eye on the College’s social platforms – you might just see a familiar face soon.
